Manchester City take on French side Lyon on Saturday night for a place in the Champions League semi-final.
Progression to the next stage of the competition would be the furthest Pep has taken this Manchester City side.
Pep Guardiola’s side eased past Real Madrid in the second leg winning 2-1 (4-2 on aggregate). Goals from Raheem Sterling and Gabriel Jesus wrapped up the tie and condemned Zinedine Zidane to his first Champions League knockout defeat as a manager.
The away side did have some dangerous spells which included a goal from Karim Benzema to make the score 1-1. After knocking out the most successful side in the history of this competition, confidence will be high.
City’s opponents Lyon are now the competitions outsiders after Atalanta lost 2-1 to PSG on Wednesday night. However, the French side will still be full of confidence after knocking out one of the competitions favourites Juventus in the last round on away goals (2-2 aggregate).Â
A 12th minute Memphis Depay penalty gave the away side the priceless away goal at the Allianz Stadium. The French side managed to hang on at the end to ensure their place in the quarter-finals.Â
Interestingly, this is not the first meeting between the pair in the Champions League. A 2-1 win away at the Etihad and a 2-2 draw at home saw Lyon become of one City’s toughest opponents last season.
Team news
Importantly, City will once again be without Sergio Aguero once again but he may be fit for the semi-final should they get there. Also, Benjamin Mendy is back after suspension, but João Cancelo should keep this place at left-back. We should expect an unchanged side from the one that beat Real Madrid.
For Lyon, their only change should see Moussa Dembele return to the starting XI after being left out against Juventus.
Manchester City team prediction:Â Ederson; Walker, Fernandinho, Laporte, Cancelo; De Bruyne, Rodrigo, Gundogan; Mahrez, Jesus, Sterling
Lyon team prediction:Â Lopes; Denayer, Marcelo, Marcal; Dubois, Caqueret, Guimaraes, Aouar, Cornet; Dembele, DepayÂ
